In wireframes and low-fidelity mockups, Lorem Ipsum fills text areas to show how a layout handles varying lengths of copy without requiring any writing work to be done first. It lets the team evaluate proportion, spacing, and hierarchy without waiting for content.
In design system component work, Lorem Ipsum is used to stress test components with different amounts of text. Filling a card component with varying lengths of Lorem Ipsum reveals whether the layout remains well-formed with short copy, with long copy, and with edge cases in between. This kind of testing prevents interface failures caused by content that behaves differently than the design assumed.
In development, Lorem Ipsum seed data populates interfaces while real content is being created or migrated, allowing visual and functional testing to proceed without content dependency.
When should Lorem Ipsum be replaced?
Lorem Ipsum should be replaced with realistic or final content before user testing and before any external review that's meant to evaluate communication quality.

A layout that looks clean and well-balanced with Lorem Ipsum can look cluttered or hierarchically confusing with real content of different lengths. An interface that feels clear with placeholder text may be confusing when real terminology, tone, and phrasing are introduced.

What are the alternatives to Lorem Ipsum?
Several alternatives exist that may be more appropriate in specific contexts.
- Representative copy is the most useful alternative for most design work. Writing approximate copy that matches the real content's length, tone, and subject matter gives a more accurate sense of how the design will work than Lorem Ipsum does. It's more work upfront but prevents the gap between placeholder and final content from being a surprise.
- Domain-specific generators produce placeholder text written for a particular industry or product type. A design for a healthcare product might use a generator that produces plausible medical terminology. A financial product design might use placeholder text that looks like financial data. These options provide more realistic content simulations than generic Lorem Ipsum for products where the specific vocabulary matters.
- Real content, pulled from an existing product or from draft copy, is the best option for late-stage design work and for any review that's evaluating communication effectiveness. Using actual content removes the abstraction of placeholder text entirely.
- Meaningful dummy names and dates, rather than generic labels, produce more realistic form and data table mockups. A table populated with "Jane Smith, Apr 3 2026" is easier to evaluate as a design than one filled with Lorem Ipsum.
